Google AI Overviews Ads in 2026: What Every Advertiser Must Do Now
Ads now appear inside Google AI Overviews — including in India — and you cannot opt out or target the placement. AI Overviews cut paid CTR on affected queries, but being cited inside the answer recovers it. Here is the strategy.
Ads now serve directly inside Google AI Overviews, and the placement is already running in India in English on mobile and desktop. You cannot opt out and you cannot target it — your existing Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible. Combined with AI Mode ads now testing in the US, this is the first time the AI answer itself has become a paid surface. Here is what the data says and what to do about it.
Where the Ads Can Appear
- Above the AI Overview, below it, or inside the AI-generated summary itself
- Inside the overview: English, mobile and desktop, in markets including India, Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, the UK and the US
- Above and below the overview: all 200+ markets where AI Overviews exist
- Inside AI Mode (deep research-style answers): in testing in the US with dedicated ad formats announced at Google Marketing Live in May 2026
Eligibility is decided by Google's existing auction using two signals: the user's query and the content of the AI Overview itself. There is no on/off switch and no way to bid for the specific placement.
The Numbers That Matter
Studies across millions of impressions show paid CTR on queries with AI Overviews fell from roughly 19.7% to about 6.3% — a 68% drop — while organic CTR on those queries fell from 1.76% to 0.61%. But the decline is not uniform. Brands actually cited inside the AI Overview recover meaningfully: cited brands get up to 35–39% higher organic CTR and 39–91% higher paid CTR than uncited competitors on the same results page. The citation is behaving like a trust signal that makes the ad next to it more likely to be clicked.
Three Different Wins on One Screen
An AI Overview now contains two kinds of brand presence. The sponsored unit is bought in an auction; the set of sources the answer draws on and links to cannot be bought at any price. They sit centimetres apart and are won in completely different ways. The cited source does the recommending; the ad carries the offer. Buying the ad while a competitor is the cited source means paying for attention inside a page that is recommending someone else — and no bid adjustment fixes that.
There is another trap: Semrush found 62% of AI citations never name the brand being cited, so a page can feed the answer without the reader registering who wrote it. And Ahrefs found AI visibility correlates most strongly with third-party mentions and video — meaning the lever for getting cited sits largely outside your own website.
The New Gemini Ad Formats
At Google Marketing Live on 20 May 2026, Google announced Gemini-generated ad formats built to sit inside AI Mode: Conversational Discovery ads (creative generated to answer the specific question asked), Highlighted Answers (sponsored suggestions within AI Mode recommendation lists), AI-powered Shopping ads that explain why a product fits the query, Business Agent for Leads (a brand chat agent inside the ad unit) and Direct Offers (promotion bundling with native checkout). These are testing in the US in English; non-US timelines are not yet published.
Reporting Reality
Google does not segment AI Overview placements in reporting — those impressions and clicks are lumped into "Top Ads". Anyone quoting you a clean AI Overviews cost-per-acquisition is inferring it, not reading it. Use Top Ads impression share and CTR on the query sets that trigger AI Overviews as proxies, and watch third-party monitors for placement signals in your category.
What to Do Now
- Run AI-friendly campaign types — AI Max for Search, Performance Max and Shopping — because manually managed exact-match campaigns are increasingly invisible in the AI Overview landscape
- Audit whether AI answers in your category cite you at all; if you are not cited, fix that before scaling ad budget on those queries
- Invest in the signals that earn citations: third-party mentions, video content, structured data and unique evidence on your pages
- Watch AI Mode adoption in your vertical — high-consideration, high-CPC categories are where the new formats will land first
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I opt out of ads inside AI Overviews?+
No. Google Ads Help states you cannot opt out of serving ads in AI Overviews, and you cannot directly target the placement either. If you run eligible Search, Shopping or Performance Max campaigns in an eligible market, you are already in.
Do I need new campaigns for AI Overview ads?+
No. Your existing text and Shopping ads from Search, Shopping and Performance Max campaigns are automatically eligible. Google decides placement using query relevance, ad quality and the content of the AI Overview.
Does buying the ad help me get cited in the AI Overview?+
There is no evidence it does. Google describes ads as serving through the existing auction independently of organic ranking. Citation is earned through third-party mentions, video and authoritative content — not ad spend.
Is the AI Overviews ad placement available in India?+
Yes. Ads within AI Overviews are live in English on mobile and desktop in India, alongside Australia, Canada, Indonesia, Malaysia, Nigeria, Pakistan, the Philippines, Singapore, the UK and the US.
